Learn to skateboard – this is how it works

You've probably watched skaters before and noticed how easy they make skating look. Unfortunately, most people don't find it easy when they first try skateboarding. But with our tips and a bit of perseverance, you'll soon realize that skateboarding isn't that difficult!

Is skateboarding difficult? Not with the right equipment!

If you want to learn to skateboard, the right board plays an important role. Not every board is equally suitable for beginners. Advanced skaters in particular use skateboards with special features. Such boards are not suitable for you as a beginner. To start with, you need:

  • A suitable beginner skateboard: with firm guidance and a straight board. With loose guidance it is much more difficult for you to keep your balance.
  • Skate shoes: When skating, you should wear suitable shoes. This means that they should have a flat, even sole. We recommend skate shoes from the brands Vans or Etnies.
  • Protective gear: Especially at the beginning, you will hardly be able to avoid the odd fall. So protect yourself with good protective equipment. This includes elbow pads, knee pads, wrist pads and of course a helmet. A helmet with a smooth surface and a tight chin strap is ideal.

Skateboarding – 5 tips for beginners

If you have the right equipment, that's a good start. But now it's time to practice, practice, practice. With these tips, it won't be difficult and you'll soon have your first successes:

For your first attempts, choose an area with a concrete floor that is as smooth as possible. Your board will roll particularly well here and pushing off will be much easier. Once you have had some practice and are more confident, you can also try out slightly uneven surfaces such as asphalt.

First of all, you have to learn to keep your balance on the board. To do this, it is important that you find a good position on the board. There are practically no rules for this. Once you have found a good position in which you are standing safely on the skateboard, keep it! To find and practice a good standing position, practice standing up. The best thing to do is to go out onto a meadow. Here the skateboard can practically not start rolling.

In the next step, you practice starting and rolling. To do this, choose a surface that is as flat and smooth as possible, as described above, so that you can roll well. Push off with one foot with as large, even steps as possible. This makes it easier to find your balance than with small, short steps. To change to the driving position, the driving foot must be in a sideways position. The front foot remains on the front of the board. Assume an upright posture and bend your knees slightly.

You turn corners by shifting your weight to the left and right. The more pressure you apply, the tighter the corner will be. Start slowly here too and gradually increase the speed.

Just like starting, braking and stopping safely are also part of skateboarding. At low speeds, you can simply stop with your foot by putting it on the ground. Pay attention to your balance. Advanced riders usually brake with the rear fin of the skateboard.

As with all things, Learn to skateboard Practice makes perfect. It is helpful if you take your cue from more advanced riders or ask them directly for tips. As soon as you can ride, steer and brake safely on your skateboard , you can gradually try your first tricks and stunts. We hope you have fun!
