Even if hoverboards seem futuristic, the technology behind them is not rocket science. Basically, there are three main components that make up a self-balancing board: two motorized wheels, a powerful battery, and a control board with integrated tilt and pressure sensors. As soon as pressure and tilt are detected on both footpads, the e-board's independent motors are engaged. This allows you to move the hoverboard forwards or backwards and left or right by shifting your weight.
How do you ride a hoverboard?
When riding a hoverboard, you should always wear protective gear (helmet and joint pads). With untrained balance, it is easy to lose your footing on an e-board, which can sometimes lead to nasty injuries. As the saying goes, the beginning is always difficult. If you are a beginner, we recommend holding onto a table or railing during your first attempts and standing on the hoverboard with both feet. As soon as you have a stable stance, you should stand upright and look straight ahead. Then, try to gently shift your weight forward or backward. You will quickly notice that your hoverboard reacts very directly to your body movements. Expert tip: Simply think of the direction you want to move in – your body will then automatically shift its weight slightly in that direction. This way, you will achieve success relatively quickly and have a lot of fun with your new hoverboard.
How do you steer a hoverboard?
To steer your hoverboard, you stand with both feet on the board and control it by shifting your weight. The pressure sensors on both footpads are essentially the gas pedals for the left and right motors of your e-board. So, if you lean further forward on the left than on the right, you steer your hoverboard to the right. Steering takes some getting used to at first. However, with a little practice, you will quickly internalize the controls and be riding safely in no time.
Where are you allowed to ride a hoverboard?
According to Swiss road traffic laws, you are NOT allowed to ride a hoverboard on the road. In other words, the hoverboard is intended for private property only. Anyone riding in public traffic risks a high fine. Thanks to the soft wheels, however, a hoverboard is also very well-suited for indoor use. With a little practice, you can also ride your electric board in the hallway of your apartment or on the patio of your house.
How long do you have to charge a hoverboard?
How long the battery takes to charge depends heavily on the quality of the hoverboard and varies from brand to brand. Generally, a hoverboard must be plugged in for 3 to 6 hours to fully recharge the board's battery. Good to know: There are hoverboards with integrated batteries and boards where the battery can be removed for charging. Models with a separate battery make the charging process at home easier.
How far can you go on one battery charge?
The riding time also differs depending on the brand and model of the hoverboard purchased. In principle, it is possible to achieve a maximum range of 20 kilometers on one battery charge. Naturally, the weight of the rider and the incline being ridden have an influence on the range of your board. The heavier the rider and the steeper the incline, the faster the battery loses power. We recommend choosing a product with a good battery when buying a hoverboard. You are well-advised with a 250-watt lithium-ion battery with 36V.
How fast does a hoverboard go?
In principle, speeds of up to 10 km/h are possible. This sounds like very little at first, but it feels quite fast on a hoverboard. To reach the maximum speed of your hoverboard, you have to shift your weight significantly forward. This can quickly create a feeling of "tipping forward." For this reason, the top speed is rarely reached, and in everyday life, you realistically ride a hoverboard at a speed of 5 to 8 km/h.
From what age can you ride a hoverboard?
There is no age limit for riding a hoverboard. However, weight is the deciding factor. The pressure sensors only detect a body weight from approx. 25 to 30 kg. In other words, a hoverboard is suitable for people or children weighing 25 to 30 kg or more.

There are countless different versions of hoverboards. The classic hoverboards are equipped with a 300-watt motor and a lithium-ion battery. In addition, there are larger versions with spikes – which were designed for sporty off-road riding. We only recommend these e-board models for professionals, however. Furthermore, more expensive versions with integrated app control are also available. With these, you can use your smartphone to influence or check the speed, acceleration, steering sensitivity, and battery status of your self-balancing scooter.
What should you look for when buying an e-board?
You should pay attention to the following when buying:

Choose an item with a high-quality 36V lithium-ion battery.

You should weigh at least 25-30 kg.
