Safe tricycles for children

What is a tricycle?

A tricycle or trike is a balance bike for small children to take their first steps in roller sports. Three wheels, a seat and a brake - that's how easy it is to describe a tricycle. Children love everything that moves and can be controlled. A tricycle is the perfect and safe introduction to the world of movement on wheels. It promotes the sense of balance and hand-eye coordination. In the past, there was "only" the classic two-wheeled balance bike. There are now also various new versions with three wheels. Most tricycles or trikes are now multifunctional, meaning you can build 3 to 4 different vehicles from one model. You start with a tricycle with handlebars for the parents, which can then be converted into a classic tricycle and in the final phase into a mini scooter or scooter for children. Our trikes and tricycles are therefore reliable companions for children between 2 and 6 years old. Buying a children's balance bike makes sense for ages 1.5 / 2 years and up. As soon as the child can sit alone and hold on to something, there is no reason to wait any longer – get on a tricycle!

What types of tricycles are there?

Tricycle with pedals

A tricycle with pedals is the direct predecessor of a children's bike and allows safe movement without direct contact with the ground. With its two wheels at the back, it is much easier to ride and allows the child a gentle introduction to the world of bikes and BMX . Unlike a bicycle, a tricycle has no gears; the pedals are fixed to the front wheel.

Tricycle without pedals

This is probably the most common tricycle. There are no pedals or propulsion mechanisms at all. The child pushes the tricycle forward with their feet - similar to a Bobby Car or another ride-on vehicle for children . When buying one, make sure that the child can touch the ground with their feet. Otherwise, they cannot move safely.

Multifunctional tricycle

The multifunctional balance bike was only developed in the last 10 years. A multifunctional tricycle combines several functions in one and the same product. As a rule, a balance bike with a bar can be converted into a classic scooter . If the child grows out of the tricycle age, the vehicle can easily be converted into a classic scooter. This means you don't have to buy a new product for your child every 2 to 3 years, which not only saves your wallet but also valuable resources.

Trikes

The trike can best be compared to a buggy . Here, however, the child has the option of steering themselves - similar to a bicycle. In other words, the parents can push the child in the three-wheeled trike with a bar and the child can still take over steering. However, there is the option of locking the steering so that only the parents can steer using the bar. A trike is perfect for family outings and is available when the child gets tired and no longer wants to walk. Most modern trikes have features such as a sunroof, which can also be used as wind and rain protection. The practical handlebar for the parents is almost always integrated. When the child gets older, the trike can be converted and you have a classic tricycle with a steering function.

Components of a tricycle and trike

1. Footboard: The footboard of a children's tricycle should be relatively low to the ground and made of high-quality aluminum or PVC. A non-slip footboard with an anti-slip coating ensures a secure footing. Decks with LED light effects are also available.

2. Handlebars: Good handlebars for tricycles are made of high-quality, plastic-free rubber. The ends of the handlebars should always be thicker so that small children cannot put them in their mouths.

3. Wheels: A multifunctional tricycle has wheels measuring between 120mm and 145mm. In addition to different qualities, LED wheels are also available, which light up due to the traction when rolling. A feature that is very popular with children.

4. Handlebar: Modern multifunctional tricycles have an integrated handlebar. This allows parents to push the child perfectly and keep an eye on and control the vehicle at all times.

5. Handlebars / steering: There are two types of handlebars or steering systems for tricycles. The classic system is body steering. The child can move to the right or left and thus move the wheels in the desired direction. Trike and buggy steering is similar to that of a bicycle. Here the child has a classic handlebar and can move it to the right or left to steer the trike or tricycle as desired.

Safety pad: The multifunctional balance bikes from the Globber and Scoot and Ride brands have a safety pad integrated into the front of the footboard. This prevents the child from falling over the handlebars onto the hard asphalt. This system can increase safety, especially for small children.

Steering lock: Globber brand tricycles have a button for steering lock. Most children between the ages of 1.5 and 2.5 still have difficulty steering and cornering. To make it easier for them to get started, you can temporarily lock the steering. This allows the child to concentrate on driving straight ahead and is less likely to fall over without cornering.

Sun/rain canopy on the trike: A good trike always has an integrated rain or sun canopy that can be removed if necessary. This means you are prepared for all seasons and your child is always well protected from wind and weather.

How much does a three-wheeler or a trike cost?

A tricycle for children can cost between CHF 89 and CHF 169. The price depends on the quality of the workmanship and the material used. A multifunctional balance bike is a little more expensive, but can be adapted to the age of the child. Trikes are in the top price league. However, these are versatile and sometimes serve as a practical buggy replacement.

Where can I buy tricycles or trikes?

All kinds of tricycles and trikes for children can be bought from the roller sports specialist Funwheel.ch. We also have a range of kickboards for children that are suitable for ages 2 and up. No matter which product you choose, we always offer you competent advice over the phone and a 30-day right of return.

At what age is a tricycle suitable for my child?

There is no general answer to this. It is always important to take the child's motor and coordination skills into account. In principle, a balance bike/trike can be used from the age of 1.5 years. It is important that the child can sit alone and hold on to the handlebars. Help your child with the first attempts at riding and never let them ride without supervision.

Areas of application

The tricycle is a perfect everyday companion for children and a popular toy and means of transport for families. Tricycles for children are only suitable for flat surfaces such as concrete or asphalt ; most models cannot be used on forest and meadow paths.
