16 or 18 inch kids bike?
For children between 100 and 120 cm tall, children's bikes with a wheel size of 16 or 18 inches are recommended. Smaller children should opt for 12-inch or 14-inch models, and older children should opt for 20-inch models.
- 90 to 100cm = 12 or 14 inch wheel size
- 100 to 120cm = 16 or 18 inch wheel size
- 115 to 135cm = 20 inch wheel size
Safety on the children's bike
We can all remember how difficult the first few meters on the bike seem before you finally get the hang of it. It takes a good sense of balance and speed to whizz through the neighborhood on a bike without training wheels. During the learning phase, your child may occasionally come into contact with asphalt or bushes. Therefore, observe the following safety rules:
- Supervise / support child
- wear a helmet
- Wear protectors
- Use space without traffic
Children's bike 5 or 6 years | What to consider when buying
This is what you should consider when buying a bike for children between the ages of 5 and 6 :
High quality
Even at this age, it pays to buy a bike with high-quality components. Firstly, it is much more fun to learn on a good bike and secondly, a high-quality bike can be ridden for much longer. Ultimately, this is cheaper and, above all, significantly more sustainable than buying several cheap models that will soon end up in the scrapyard.
Tip: If your child is too big for a children's bike , you can easily resell it on platforms like Tutti or Ricardo .
Weight
The weight of the bike is crucial, especially for small children. A light bike is much easier to handle than a heavy one. That's why we recommend a children's bike with an aluminum frame. These bikes weigh just 6 to 7 kilos and can be picked up by children as young as 5 or 6 years old and even carried over short distances.
With or without gears?
Most 16- and 18-inch children's bikes have gears. There are models from S'cool or Academy that automatically shift to the next gear when the bike reaches a certain speed. There are 3-speed models with hub gears and also models from S'COOL with 7-speed derailleur gears. Note: The more gears the bike has, the more maintenance work it will require.
Security
Safety when cycling is a top priority, especially for children. Therefore, always follow these tips:
- Always wear protective equipment (helmet and pads)
- Only practice on streets and squares without traffic
- Only drive with lights on in the dark
- Check brakes regularly and adjust them optimally
- Check gear shift regularly
- Check tire pressure regularly
