What is a longboard?

A longboard is a particularly large skateboard that was developed for cruising and riding slalom-like curves. It is significantly longer than a street skateboard with its towering ends and can be from 90 to 190 cm long. Longboards are available in different versions for different riding techniques. The riding characteristics can be adapted to the individual needs of the rider at any time by changing the components.

The advantages of a longboard

The wheels of a longboard are not only larger in diameter, they are also significantly wider. This makes the longboard significantly less susceptible to small stones, thresholds and other uneven surfaces on the road. It is very unlikely that your skateboard will brake unexpectedly because of a pebble and that you will fall over as a result. Thanks to the length of the deck and the large wheelbase, a longboard offers wonderfully smooth handling. This not only enables fantastic curves like when surfing, but also high speeds that would be breakneck with a freestyle skateboard.

What you need to pay attention to when buying a longboard

• It is difficult to give a general recommendation on choosing the right longboard because it depends largely on personal preferences.
• In general, tall and heavy people should choose a model with a long deck.
• Shorter boards or cruisers are more suitable for kids
• The width of the longboard is less important than with the street skateboard, since fewer tricks are done
• Choose a good ball bearing for good gliding ability (ABEC 1 to ABEC-9)
• The bigger the wheels, the smoother the ride of your board (46mm and 54mm)

1. Deck

There are five different deck types for longboards: Downhill, Freeride, Cruising, Carvin, Slalom, Dancing. We currently have the most common deck types in our online shop: Downhill and Slalom

2nd Axis

Like conventional skateboard trucks, longboard trucks consist of a base plate and a hanger, which are connected to each other via the kingpin (one screw). The base plate is attached to the deck with 4 screws.

3. Ball bearings

With longboards, too, choosing a good ball bearing is crucial for a high running speed of your wheels. If you skimp on the ball bearings, you will have to push your board more often to overcome flat areas in the terrain or to achieve particularly high speeds. Ceramic ball bearings are particularly recommended for downhill riding, as they are particularly heat-resistant. Choose between the following qualities: (ABEC 1 to ABEC-9)

4. Wheels

Wheels for longboards are usually made of polyurethane and are available in different hardnesses, widths and diameters. Do you want wheels with a high level of grip, is smooth running the most important thing or do you want to be able to slide as well as possible? 5. Steering rubbers

With the steering rubbers, also called bushings, you can influence the steering behavior of your board. Do you want a board that reacts to the smallest movements? Then you should choose very soft steering rubbers. Do you need a longboard that offers the highest stability on the road and runs as smoothly as possible? Then you should mount the hardest bushings possible on your axle. Good to know: You can change steering rubbers yourself at any time with a skater tool and thus easily adapt your skateboard to your needs.

6. Grip tape

Most complete boards already have grip tape stuck on. If this is not the case, or your old grip tape no longer offers the desired grip, you can apply a new one in just a few steps. Remove the old tape with a cutter, remove any traces of glue, and put on the new tape and cut it to size. A grip as coarse as possible is recommended, especially for longboards. Because when you slide to brake on the street, you need the greatest possible grip for your feet on your board.
