What is a waveboard?
The waveboard, formerly also called a casterboard (caster = English for wheel), is a fun sports device similar to a skateboard. The difference to a skateboard lies in the movable, central axle. Instead of a continuous deck like a skateboard, two plastic footplates are used, connected by a short torsion bar that allows for a slight counter-rotational movement of the footplates around the longitudinal axis. Under each footplate, there is a wheel, which is freely or limitedly swiveling depending on the model. The waveboard is also often called a "snakeboard". This naming originated from the snake-like riding style of the waveboard. Besides the movable axle, the biggest difference to a classic skateboard is that a snakeboard only has 2 wheels.
How does a wave skateboard work?
A snakeboard consists of two footplates and an axle or a torsion bar in the middle. By applying alternating pressure to the two footplates, the board moves forward. You need some practice to ride a waveboard safely. Once you have learned it, however, you will experience a lot of street surfing action and fun with your waveboard.
How do you ride and steer a snakeboard?
First of all, you need to know whether you ride "regular" or "goofy". Regular means that the left foot is placed in front; with "goofy," the right foot is in front. Place your "lead foot" (the front foot) on the front footplate, then push off slightly on the asphalt with your "pushing foot". As soon as you have a little momentum, you can move your "pushing foot" on the rear footplate and keep your "wave board" going with small wave-like movements. The great advantage of a snakeboard compared to a skateboard is that you can keep both feet on the board while riding without losing speed. This is because you do not have to push off against the asphalt to pick up speed; the propulsion is generated by the wave motion.
Where are you allowed to ride?
In Switzerland, there is no road approval for the snakeboard. This means that, in principle, you are only allowed to ride on private property (garage areas, forecourts, private roads, etc.). Busy roads are too dangerous for snakeboards anyway, and use on the sidewalk is also not permitted.
At what age can you ride a waveboard?
A waveboard can basically be ridden at any age. However, a good sense of balance and a certain level of athleticism are important prerequisites. As a rule, children from 5-6 years old can begin riding a snakeboard. Most children quickly become familiar with the unique snake-like movements and enjoy passing on their knowledge to other children.
How much does a waveboard cost?
The price for a snakeboard in Switzerland is currently between CHF 64 and CHF 149. As always, higher quality is reflected in the price of the board. We recommend buying a high-quality model, which promises a long lifecycle.
Are there different snakeboard models?
There are waveboards with two movable footplates or so-called RipStik boards, which consist of a one-piece surface. The more modern version is the board with two movable footplates. We recommend this model especially for all beginners.
What should you look for when buying?
Weight: A particularly smooth riding experience is achieved with a light and agile snakeboard. The lightweight materials are slightly more expensive to purchase, which is reflected in the price.
Quality: Choose the best quality when buying a waveboard so that you can enjoy your fun sports item for as long as possible. We also encourage this approach from an ecological perspective.
Wheel quality: Wheels with good ball bearings improve the gliding behavior of your waveboard and ensure that you can move forward with little effort. You should therefore not skimp on the ball bearings.

Safety when skating
Basically, riding is no more dangerous than riding a scooter or bicycle. Here, too, practice makes perfect. If you adjust your risk and speed to your ability, you can prevent unpleasant accidents. We strongly recommend wearing a helmet, wrist guards, and knee pads while riding. Use caution, especially during the learning phase, as dangerous falls can happen quickly. At the beginning, hold on to a person or a railing. After a short time, you will develop a feel for your board and will be carving the first cool snake lines over the asphalt.
