Cruiser Board & Penny Board

Buy a Cruiser Skateboard – The Heirs of the Penny Board

The first cruiser skateboards, also called penny boards, were developed in the 1980s. Usually very colorful and made of plastic (PVC), they resemble the classic skateboard, but are usually much smaller. The best-known brand is Penny Board, which was founded in 2010 and is now often used as a synonym for this type of skateboard. But there are now countless good alternatives to the original. Cruisers have been a feature of the cityscape since the 1990s and are considered cool, modern and trendy. Do you want to buy a cruiser skateboard that will take you through the city with great fun? Our specialists will be happy to advise you personally.

What are cruiser skateboards?

A cruiser board is smaller than the classic skateboard and, unlike the well-known wooden skateboards, often comes with a high-quality plastic deck. Penny boards are perfect for cruising through the city and are the perfect alternative to a bike for short distances. Do you want to quickly buy a snack and then meet your friends in the city? Grab your cruiser board and get from A to B quickly and comfortably. Thanks to its small size and low weight, this skateboard is very easy to transport and can be conveniently strapped onto your backpack. Many advantages that should make your purchase decision easier!

What you should pay attention to when buying a cruiser

  • A cruiser skateboard is between 22 inches and 28 inches in size. For beginners and comfortable city traffic, we recommend buying a 22-inch cruiser board
  • Make sure your Penny skateboard has good ball bearings. The better the wheels on your cruiser run, the more comfortable your ride will be. We recommend at least ABEC 7, even better ABEC 9 or even ABEC 11.
  • Whether you are a child, teenager or adult – the range of uses for cruiser boards is limitless. Use your skateboard as a daily means of transport, as a sports equipment or as a toy for children
  • For the Cruiser wheels, choose between classic smooth or sanded (similar to sandblasted). The size of the wheels varies between 60 mm x 45 mm and hardness from 78A to 80A.
  • The axles and bushings should be set relatively softly. This will allow you to drive smoothly and nimbly through the streets.
  • When it comes to cruiser boards, there are hardly any limits when it comes to design. Choose between single-coloured or brightly coloured colour combinations in the 80s style.
  • Cruiser skateboards are suitable for everyone, whether beginner or professional
  • Most cruisers are designed for a maximum weight of 100kg. For heavier people, we recommend longboards with a stiff deck.

Cruiser components - This is what makes your skateboard

  1. Decks: Cruiser decks are available in sizes between 22 inches and 28 inches in our shop. The classic is the 22-inch board made of PVC without grip tape. There are also cruisers made of Canadian or Chinese wood, which have grip tape for a good footing. The surface of a PVC board has a rough structure to improve grip on the board.
  2. Axles: The axles are usually set very light so that you can maneuver easily through the city. The axles are often made of light aluminum and come in various colors.
  3. Ball bearings: The ball bearings used correspond to the quality standard ABEC 7 or ABEC 9. The higher the ABEC value, the better the rolling properties. In our experience, ball bearings of quality ABEC 7 are usually sufficient for everyday use.
  4. Wheels: The wheels on Penny Boards are larger and wider than on classic street skateboards. This gives you more grip and the wheels are less susceptible to bumps. Cruiser wheels are available in the size 60 mm x 45 mm with hardnesses from 78A to 80A.
  5. Bushings: Bushings on a PVC skateboard must be robust and soft at the same time. For our Penny Boards, we therefore use quality bushings with good strength

Which cruiser for whom?

Riding a cruiser board is a little more difficult at first than riding a street skateboard or longboard. The reason for this is the smaller deck, which makes it a little harder to keep your balance. After a few days of practice, however, you will be able to cruise safely and comfortably through your city on your penny board.

How much does a cruiser board cost?

Mini skateboards or cruiser boards cost between CHF 59 and CHF 99 in our Swiss online shop. The price is determined by the size of the deck and the quality of the ball bearings, axles and wheels. Good cruiser boards are available for as little as CHF 59.

Where can I buy skateboards?

Areas of use for cruiser skateboards

Cruiser skateboards are designed for the street and less for tricks in the skate park. They are ideal as a means of transport to get from A to B and, unlike longboards, can be perfectly stored in your bag if they are not needed.

Safety when skateboarding

Even though the risk of injury is high, there is no obligation to wear protective equipment when skateboarding. However, we always recommend that you wear a helmet and knee and elbow pads when skating.

How do you ride cruiser boards?

Especially for beginners, it is helpful to get a few tips before riding. We therefore recommend that you take a look at the Pennyboard riding website before your first ride on your skateboard.
