Kind macht trick in der Luft auf einem BMX

Kids BMX – Bikes for active kids

BMX components – parts of your bike

A children's BMX is fundamentally different from a normal bike. The wheels are small and have a strong profile, the frame is compact and the center of gravity is low. There is no need for gears, but there is a freely rotating handlebar and pedals with particularly good grip. We have put together the most important BMX components for you:

1. Frame

The frame of a BMX bike is usually made of iron or aluminum. An aluminum frame is significantly lighter than an iron frame, but is more expensive and drives up the price of the product. If you are ambitious and want to try freestyle tricks soon, an aluminum frame is the best option. The frame of a children's BMX is always cut small and the rider's center of gravity is therefore low.

2. Pedals

BMX pedals need grip. The rider needs the best possible foothold for stunts and rides on the pump track. Most pedals are made of aluminum or plastic and have spikes that provide good grip even when the soles of the feet are dirty.

3. Chain / Gear ratio

A BMX bike usually does not have gears. The gear ratio can only be changed by changing a different pinion, chainring or the entire hub.

4. Handlebar

The handlebars of a BMX almost always have a crossbar and are shaped about shoulder width. They can be rotated 360 degrees when doing tricks.

5. Handles

The handles should be wide and provide a good grip. Rubber handles with knobs are usually used.

6. Brakes

BMX bikes often use so-called "U-breaks", i.e. brakes that enclose the wheel in a U-shape. Disc brakes are too heavy and can easily get caught on obstacles during maneuvers. Brake cables are often routed through the fork, which allows the handlebars to rotate 360 degrees.

7. Saddle

A BMX saddle should not be too hard, as part of the landing energy is often transferred to the saddle along with the pedals and handlebars. The saddle should always be adjustable in height and backwards and forwards.

Pegs

Pegs are axle extension rods that are attached to the front and rear wheels. They were designed for "grinds," which describes tricks where you slide over walls and poles on the pegs. The term "grind" comes from English and means something like "to grind."

Wheels / Tires

Our BMXs for children and teenagers come with wheel sizes ranging from 12 inches to 20 inches . The tires are about the same width as a mountain bike and often have a strong profile, which ensures good grip even on difficult terrain.

Areas of use: racing, tricks and off-road

Of course, you can also ride a BMX to school, but these bikes are primarily designed for children to ride on pump tracks, ramps and through pipes. You can roughly distinguish between the following three directions: •

Off-road riding like on a mountain bike.

BMX bikes usually don't have gears, so they're best suited for downhill riding. The wide tires and low center of gravity make it easier to overcome difficult terrain. For short distances, they're also great for climbing hills and riding off-road.

Run

As with motocross, BMX has its own race tracks, which can have different ground features and obstacles. The aim is to reach the finish line faster than everyone else or, for example, to get further without pedaling by "pumping".

Tips

The BMX is designed for versatility. The axles are extended, the frame is reinforced and the front wheel can rotate 360 degrees. This allows you to perform a range of tricks, some of which are similar to those in artistic cycling, but are also often reminiscent of stunts from skateboarding. With a BMX you can ride freestyle perfectly on your own tracks, in skate parks and anywhere else where it is allowed in public spaces. Tip: Buy your own skateboard ramp and use it to build your own freestyle park for your BMX !

Kids BMX: What you should pay attention to

Children can get on their BMX at a very young age because it is small and does not require a great deal of effort. However, coordination and balance should already be well developed. Make sure that the bike is approved for use on the road if it is not only to be ridden in your own garden or on special courses. Complete protective equipment including a helmet , gloves and joint protectors is also essential. Falls are unavoidable, but if you are well prepared you can usually survive without major injuries.

If you encourage your child's enthusiasm for BMX riding, he or she will definitely not become a couch potato. Have them explain to you what tricks they can do and how they can control their bike better.

Spare parts and accessories

Care is particularly important for BMX bikes that are subject to heavy use. A little dirt doesn't do any harm. But completely dirty brakes, ball bearings and brackets will eventually cause problems. In our online shop for children's bikes , scooters and roller sports, you can get everything you need for care and maintenance. As with protective equipment, the same applies here: you should use it right from the start to ensure ideal conditions and accident-free BMX fun.
