BMX Components – Parts of your bike

A kids' BMX differs fundamentally from a normal bicycle. The wheels are small and have a strong tread, the frame is compact, and the center of gravity is low. There is no need for gears, but you do need handlebars that can rotate freely and pedals with extra-good grip. We have put together the most important BMX components for you:

1. Frame

The frame of a BMX bike is usually made of iron or aluminum. An aluminum frame is significantly lighter than an iron frame, but it is more expensive and drives up the product price. If you are ambitious and want to try your hand at freestyle tricks soon, an aluminum frame is the best choice. The frame of a kids' BMX is always small, which keeps the rider's center of gravity low.

2. Pedals

BMX pedals need grip. Riders need the best possible foot hold for stunts and riding on the pump track. Most pedals are made of aluminum or plastic and have spikes that offer good grip even when there is dirt on the soles of your shoes.

3. Chain / Gearing

A BMX bike usually does not have gears. The gear ratio can only be changed by using a different sprocket, chainring, or the entire hub.

4. Handlebars

The handlebars of a BMX almost always have a crossbar and are about shoulder-width wide. They can be rotated 360 degrees for tricks.

5. Grips

Grips should be chosen to be wide and offer good hold. Generally, rubber grips with studs are used.

6. Brakes

BMX bikes usually use "U-brakes," which are brakes that enclose the wheel in a U-shape. Disc brakes are too heavy and can easily get caught on obstacles during maneuvers. Brake cables are often routed through the fork, which allows for a 360-degree rotation of the handlebars.

7. Saddle

A BMX saddle should not be too hard, because it is not uncommon for some of the landing energy to be absorbed by the saddle, in addition to the pedals and handlebars. The saddle should always be adjustable in height as well as forward and backward.

Pegs

Pegs are axle-extending bars that are attached to the front and rear wheels. They were designed for "grinds," which describes tricks where you slide on the pegs over walls and rails. The term "grinding" comes from English and means something like "to scrape."

Wheels / Tires

Our BMX bikes for kids and teenagers come with a wheel size ranging from 12 inches to 20 inches. The tires are about as wide as those on a mountain bike and often feature a strong tread, which ensures good grip even in difficult terrain.

Areas of use: Racing, tricks, and off-road

Of course, you can also ride a BMX to school, but primarily these bicycles are designed for children to ride over pump tracks, ramps, and through pipes. You can roughly distinguish between the following three directions:

Off-road riding like a mountain bike.

Usually, BMX bikes do not have gears, so they are primarily suitable for downhill riding. The wide tires and low center of gravity make it easier to overcome difficult terrain. For short distances, you can also manage inclines well and ride off paved roads.

Racing

Just like for motocross, there are specific race tracks for BMX that can have various ground features and obstacles. The goal is to reach the finish line faster than everyone else or, for example, to keep moving as much as possible without pedaling by "pumping."

Tricks

The BMX is designed for versatility. The axles are extended, the frame is reinforced, and the front wheel can be rotated a full 360 degrees. This allows for a series of tricks that sometimes resemble artistic cycling but often also remind one of stunts from skateboarding. With a BMX, you can perfectly ride freestyle in public spaces on your own tracks, in skate parks, or anywhere else permitted. Kids' BMX: What you should look out for

Children can start riding their BMX at a very early age because it is small and does not require much physical effort. However, their coordination and balance should be well-developed. Make sure that the bike is street-legal if it is not only to be ridden in your own garden or on special courses. Furthermore, complete protective gear, including a helmet, gloves, and joint pads, is essential. Falls are inevitable, but with good preparation, they can usually be survived without any major injuries.

If you encourage a passion for BMX riding, your child will certainly not become a couch potato. Let them explain what tricks they have mastered and how they can better control their bike.

BMX bikes are generally ridden very low. This makes it easier to do tricks.

Maintenance is particularly important for heavily used BMX bikes. A little dirt doesn't hurt, but completely filthy brakes, ball bearings, and mounts will eventually cause problems over time.
