The helmet is too big. It slips down over your child's eyes. Your child can't see anything, doesn't want to wear it anymore – and you wonder if this will ever work out.
Spoiler: Yes. With the right size, it won’t take three minutes.
In short
- ➜Measure the head circumference (tape measure just above the eyebrows) – that is your helmet size.
- ➜The helmet sits two finger-widths above the eyebrows and does not wobble.
- ➜After a fall: new helmet. Always.
How to measure your child's head
Place a tape measure once around the head – about one centimeter above the eyebrows and over the ears.
The number in centimeters is your helmet size. It is listed on every helmet (e.g., 48–52 cm). No tape measure on hand? A piece of string and a ruler will do just fine.

The 2-finger and wobble test
- Front: About two fingers should fit between the eyebrows and the edge of the helmet. No more.
- Wobble test: Shake your head – the helmet stays where it is. If it slides, it's too big.
- Chin strap: One finger fits between the strap and the chin.

Which type of helmet for your child?
For everyday use, bikes, scooters, and the skate park, a classic children's bike helmet is enough: light, well-ventilated, and available in many designs.
For the full-throttle crowd – BMX, downhill, pump track – there are full-face helmets with a chin bar. More protection for the face, but slightly heavier.
Rule of thumb: the faster and wilder, the more protection.
When a helmet needs to be retired
- After every hard fall – even if you can't see anything from the outside. The foam absorbs impact once, then it's done.
- Without a fall: about every five years, or if the shell and foam show cracks.
- And when your child has outgrown it. (Happens faster than you'd like.)
A bike helmet is a bit like sunscreen: the best one is the one you actually wear.
Frequently asked questions about children's bike helmets
Which helmet size fits which age?
Age is only a rough guide – the measured head circumference is the deciding factor. Toddlers are often in the 44–52 cm range, school children at 50–56 cm.
Can a helmet grow with the child?
Many children's helmets have a dial at the back for fine-tuning. This compensates for a few centimeters, but does not replace a new size.
Does my child need a full-face helmet?
Only if they ride BMX, downhill, or pump track. For everyday use and the way to school, a normal bike helmet is sufficient.
