Your child points to a scooter in the store and shouts, "That one!" But: Is it actually age-appropriate – and does it suit what your child wants to do with it?
So that the scooter doesn't end up gathering dust in the basement, here is our honest buying guide.
In a nutshell
- ➜3-wheel scooters for the little ones (stability), 2-wheel city scooters for easy cruising – and the stunt scooter, today's trendy companion for BOTH the skatepark and the way to school.
- ➜The right size depends on the handlebar height (body height), not the birthday.
- ➜Helmet on – and protective gear for tricks.

The trend: Stunt scooters for the school commute
A word from practice: The biggest trend today is the stunt scooter – and it's long since moved beyond just the skatepark. Many kids use their sturdy stunt scooters daily as their companion for the school commute. No wonder: built to be stable, can withstand a lot, and simply looks cool.
The honest compromise: Stunt scooters are usually not foldable and slightly heavier than a city scooter. If you travel a lot by tram or bus or often have to carry the scooter, you'll be more comfortable with a light, foldable city scooter. If your child is mainly concerned with style and durability, the stunt scooter is the first choice – for the school commute and skatepark alike.
3 wheels or 2?
The most important question for the little ones. 3 wheels stand on their own – your child learns to steer and push off without tipping over. As soon as their balance is solid (usually from 5–6 years), the 2-wheeler becomes exciting: faster, more maneuverable, and depending on the type, foldable (city) or robust and suitable for tricks (stunt).
Rule of thumb: If your child can already ride a bike or a balance bike, they are ready for a 2-wheel scooter.
What size? The handlebar height must fit
A scooter fits when the handlebar is positioned roughly between your child's hip and navel. Too high makes steering wobbly, while too low forces them into a hunched posture.
The easiest way is to choose directly based on body height: 100 cm and up, 120 cm and up, or 140 cm and up. Many models are also height-adjustable and grow with the child to some extent.
Safety: Helmet always, pads for tricks
A helmet is a must for every ride – non-negotiable. Anyone practicing tricks in the skatepark will be much more relaxed with pads for knees, elbows, and wrists.

Common questions about kids' scooters
At what age does a scooter make sense?
A 3-wheel model often works well starting at 2 to 3 years old. The deciding factor is that your child can stand securely and walk.
3-wheel or 2-wheel scooter?
3 wheels give toddlers stability. As soon as their balance is solid (around 5–6 years old), the 2-wheeler is faster and more agile.
Which scooter for the school commute?
The trend is clearly toward the robust stunt scooter – many children use them to ride to school every day. Anyone who prefers something light and foldable (e.g., for taking on the bus) is better off with a city scooter.
